A wide range of Inner Barrels are available from a soft material Hydraulic Piston Core up to the “Alien” Hard Rock Coring arrangement. Other inner barrels may include Wison CPT and Wison Sample Methods as well as Non Coring (Full Hole) inner assemblies.
470 Hydraulic Piston Core (HPC)
This Hydraulic Piston Core inner assembly is for collecting soft sediments and similar material up to moderately stiff clay. The 2.44” diameter core is collected into ODP specification cellulose acetate butyrate plastic liner. The hydraulic piston core is collected by driving a corelifter case (shoe), corelifter, inner tube and liner into the formation using drill string fluid pressure. The HPC Assembly (20006) is deployed into the string where it seats, seals and latches into the bottom hole assembly. Drill string fluid pressure is applied up to 750 psi where 3 shear pins release the sample assembly and it is then driven into the formation for 3m. (1.5m optional) The sample is retained by a basket corelifter of various stiffness values as well as suction created by the active piston within the plastic liner. At completion of the stroke the drill string pressure is released once it reaches a 1000 psi relief pressure setting. The drill string is then pulled back to remove the sample tube from the formation. Wireline is then used to pull the inner assembly to the surface. The drill string is then drilled down the same amount as the sample length taken.
470 Extended Nose Punch Core (EXN)
The Extended Nose Sampler (EXN) is an assembly for collecting core samples in sediment using direct push force. This Extended Nose Sampler is deployed into the drill string and seats, seals and latches into the bottom hole assembly at the end of the drill string. The core sampling portion consisting of the core lifter case (shoe), core lifter, inner tube and liner is pushed into the formation by the drill string and is isolated from the rotating drill string by a swivel bearing arrangement. This inner assembly also has a vertical movement of up to 2 inches depending on the amount of force against a return spring is required to penetrate the material. The extended nose sampler shares the same shoe, core lifter, and liner as the Hydraulic Piston Core Sampler. The ODP Liner (90020) as well as EXN ALN Aluminum Split Tubes (90043) can be used in the Extended Nose Sampler. The run length of the Extended Nose Sampler is up to 3 meters before pulling the inner assembly with the wireline.
470 “Alien” Flush – Extended Hard Rock Coring (ALN)
The Alien Sampler (ALN) is an Inner Tube Assembly for collecting core samples in hard formations that cannot be sampled using either of the two push style samplers. The Alien Sampler is deployed into the drill string and seats, seals and latches into the Bottom Hole Assembly at the end of the drill string. The core sampling portion consisting of the shoe, core lifter, inner tube and liner is isolated from the rotating drill string by a swivel bearing arrangement. The ALN Outer Tube and Coring Bit rotate with the Main Outer Bit and flushing water is ported through the face discharge ports in the ALN Bit. Due to the various sample types that the ALN may encounter there are three core lifter types: the HPC EXN ALN basket core lifter, an integrated core lifter shoe/basket spring, a diamond coring hard rock-style core lifter with basket springs and a hard rock-style core lifter with no basket. Aluminum split liners are also available for the Alien Sampler. The run length of the Alien Sampler is up to 3 meters before pulling the inner assembly with the wireline.
470 Non Coring Inner Assembly (NCA)
The Non Coring Inner Tube assembly places a full face drill bit within the main outer bit. The inner assembly latches using the standard latch head that locks the inner tube in a vertical position as well as 2 of the 4 latches are used to transmit torque to the inner assembly. When the full hole depth is drilled the inner assembly is tripped with the wireline and sampling can proceed with the sample tool of choice.
470 QD Wison Tools
The QD Wison Tool set enables Wison CPT and QD Tech Sampling Tools to be run concurrently in the same BHA without having to trip the drill string.
